Betaine HCL and Diabetes

Common Names: hydrochloric acid.
Do not confuse Betaine HCl with the amino acid betaine (trimethylglycine).

Betaine hydrochloride is an acidic form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. Betaine hydrochloride is recommended by some doctors as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid for people who have a deficiency of stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria).A deficiency of gastric acid secretion increases the likelihood and severity of certain bacterial and parasitic intestinal infections. A normal stomach’s level of gastric acid is sufficient to destroy bacteria. In one study, most fasting people who had normal acidity in the stomach had virtually no bacteria in the small intestine. Some bacterial colonization of the stomach occurred in people who had low levels of hydrochloric acid.

Important Research and opinions on Betaine HCL and digestion.

Betaine hydrochloride and digestion
Betaine hydrochloride is also known as hydrochloric acid (HCl) or stomach acid. It helps digest food by breaking up fats and proteins. The low pH of the stomach’s hydrochloric acid also destroys ingested bacteria and other microorganisms. Adequate levels of HCl are necessary for adequate absorption of protein, calcium.

Betaine hydrochloride as adigestive enzyme
Betaine hydrochloride is a form of hydrochloride acid that is derived from beets, although one cannot get a therapeutic level of Betaine HCL from simply eating beets. It is commonly used as a digestive enzyme by individuals who do not produce enough hydrochloric acid to digest the proteins that they eat. It has been estimated that approximately 30% of elderly adults have insufficient production of hydrochloric acid in their stomach. The clinical terms for people with limited or a lack of hydrochloric acid secretion are hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria. Without enough hydrochloric acid, the body may have difficulty absorbing nutrients because it is the hydrochloric acid that continues the digestive process by breaking down the foods we eat. This means that a low level of hydrochloric acid can be a contributing factor in numerous other clinical conditions such as asthma, atherosclerosis, candida yeast infections, gastritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Betaine Hydrochloride on digestion problems
Betaine Hydrochloride is a dietary supplement that helps with digestion problems caused by underproduction of stomach acid. It is a source of hydrochloric acid, which occurs naturally in the stomach and breaks down proteins and fats. The acid also regulates acidity levels in the stomach and protects the organ from potentially damaging micro-organisms.
